Born Johan Matalik in the town of Hodermark, in north-central Slovakia (then Hungary), he was the son of Michael and Maria (Jankura) Matalik. Husband to Maria A. (Kubek) Matalik, and father to ten children: John, George, Mary, Susan, Anna, Catherine, Christina, Joseph, Carolyn, and Julius.
He came to America by himself in 1892, married Maria Kubek - who was also from Hodermark - the same year in Cambria County, PA. They then settled in the Tyre/Santiago area where John worked as a coalminer.
John's sister, Susanna (Matalik) Greck and his brother-in-law, Michael Greck are also buried in Valley Cemetery.
