Mattie was the younger of two daughters of Marie Auguste Wilhelmine (Mary) Schumann (1863-1947) and Christian Josef Gross (1859-1922). She became a schoolteacher, as evidenced by the last verifiable record found for her - the 1920 Federal census, which lists her living with her parents in Murdock, MN, and teaching. In 1900 in Murdock, she is living with her parents, her sister Erna Carlyn, and their mother's father Fred Schumann. The census of 1910 finds the family of four in Cashel, Swift County, MN.

Mattie is not to be confused with her agemate of the same name, who grew up in St. Paul and who is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Murdock, where Mattie's fathers lie and where she also may be buried. (Her mother, who outlived her husband by a quarter century, is buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul, MN.) There is a death record for a Mattie L. Gross Suff on 29 Oct. 1921 in Beltrami, Polk County, MN, but this is unlikely to be this Mattie's record. A 1919 listing in "Women in Industry" is for Martha Gross age 23, working at Brown and Bigelow, St. Paul, a publishing house; this is most likely the agemate of the same name as Mattie's.
