He married Mary Almira Huggins on March 11, 1869, in Wapello County, Iowa (daughter of Orinda Huggins). They went to California in the 1870s and were living in Redwood Township, Santa Clara County, at the time of the 1880 census. In the 1900 census, they lived on North 5th St. in the city of San Jose. San Jose Evening News, June 16, 1908, p.8. "News has been received in this city of the death in Seattle of 'Mack' Davis, formerly of San Jose. Mr. Davis died on June 5, after a brief illness at the age of 60 years. He was a native of Birmingham, Iowa. He leaves a widow and three daughters. He was a war veteran, serving through the Civil War with distinction. Mr. Davis came to San Jose about twenty years ago and purchased the hardware store for many years known as Arnold's. It was located on South First street opposite the Commercial Savings Bank. He conducted the store for a number of years. About seven years ago he left San Jose and went to Seattle, where he engaged in the hardware business, which he conducted up to the time of his death. Mr. Davis had a wide acquaintance in this city and was popular with all who knew him, his many old friends here will regret to learn of his death."
