Stephen Earl "Steve" Bruens, Sr., 72, of Wellington, IL, passed away at 6:03 A.M. Monday, October 16, 2023, at his home.

He was born August 26, 1951, in Danville, IL, the son of Willard Henry and Maurine Earlene Agnes (Longfellow) Bruens. He married Rena Dale and together they had two sons. He later married Teresa L. Huddleson on February 15, 2003, in Las Vegas, NV. She survives in Wellington.

He is also survived by his two sons, Stephen E. (Samantha) Bruens, Jr., of Wellington, IL and William "Billy" (Ashley) Bruens of Wellington, IL; one step daughter, Chrissy (Todd) Draper of Oakwood, IL; one step son, Jason (Stacey) Todd of Danville, IL; three sisters, Deborah (Kevin) Tyler, Sandy (John) Bray, and Janie (Allan) Baker all of Hoopeston, IL; one sister-in-law, Debra Huddleson of Oakwood, IL; one brother-in-law, Rob (Carol) Huddleson of Catlin, IL; eight grandchildren, Rylee (fiancée, Alyssa), Karlee, Emmalee, Leevi, Natalee (fiancé, Luc), Bentley, Conlee, and Dailee Bruens; six step grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews and special friend, Dave Gaddis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece, Tara Tyler.

Steve was a hard worker, working at several places throughout his life including Joan of Arc, FMC as a mechanic, Gaddis Uptown Service, Lockhart Sales, and LS Diesel. He had also worked at Barney's Garage, Leemon Enterprises, and helped his son, Steve, at Bruens Carpentry. Throughout his life, Steve also helped his grandpa Longfellow on the farm. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hoopeston. He was a long-time member of the Wellington Greer Fire Department, starting his service March 20, 1993. Steve served several years as assistant chief and was still actively serving. In his younger years, he loved competing in demo derby's. Steve also enjoyed trapping with his dad, fishing, playing slow pitch softball, horseshoes, and was an avid bowler, bowling 41 consecutive years in the ABC bowling tournament.

A visitation will be held 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday October 23, 2023, at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston, IL. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the funeral home with Pastor John Franklin officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston.
