With a heavy heart, the family announces the passing of Hazel Mae Payne, of Manns Harbor, NC. At the age of 91, Mrs. Payne died on Sunday, January 31, 2021, at Peak Resources – Outer Banks in Nags Head, NC.

She was born July 29, 1929, to the late Henry and Rena Ambrose. Mae spent her early years on Manteo's north end then she moved to East Lake to raise her family. She was a fire spotter at the East Lake Fire Tower for years and later worked in various hotels in Nags Head until she retired. She settled in Manns Harbor and always considered that her home.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, and sisters, two husbands, and her beloved daughter Hazel Beasley. She is survived by one son, Chuck Sarvis; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Mae was known for her amazing cooking ability, her enormous beds of impatiens, and her incredible love of babies. Her happiest times were those spent with her grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at East Lake United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Matt Seals officiating.
