Available census records indicate that sometime after 1 Jun 1880 and sometime before 28 Jun 1900 his name changed from Perry D. (P.D) Weatherford to William Perry Weatherford.

According to family folklore, a family member (either an Uncle or a Cousin) was murdered back East (possibly Illinois) and "Doc" went and killed the man that murdered his relative and shortly afterwords changed his name.

"Doc" Weatherford authored a letter (Aug 19, 1942) in which he claimed to be a Great Grandson of William "Red Eagle" Weatherford (also mentioned in his obituary).
