Don's father died from burns on 27 May 1939 after an explosion at the plant of the Battenfield Grease and Oil Corporation in Kansas City. His father was age 26, and Don was almost age 3.
Donald married Barbara Ann Ninemire on June 20, 1954 in Kansas City, Kansas at the Stony Point Christian Church there.
There were three children born to this Union. Two of which died as a result of a tragic Automobile accident.
