"Jim", as he was known to all who loved him, lived a very full and active 86 years. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and began his many travels around the world. He spent most of his time in the Navy serving on diesel submarines. He was stationed in San Diego, CA, which he said was one of his favorite places in the world. He also served time in Japan. He left the Navy in 1958 and returned to Lancaster where he met and married his first wife, Mary Patricia "Pat" Sellers Snipes in December of 1958. He re-enlisted in the Navy at that time and he and Pat moved to various Naval Stations in the Northeast. During that time, they had two children Janis Elizabeth and James Edward Jr. (Jim). Their last duty station was Charleston, SC where he finished his Naval Career of 20+ years as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. During his time in the Navy, he continued his education and graduated from Trident Technical College with an associate degree in engineering. After retiring from the Navy, he began working for Civil Service at NAVALEX. His wife Pat passed away in October of 1981. after a short battle with cancer. In 1983 he married Mary Ann Parker Snipes, and they spent the next 40 years together enjoying their family and life on the river in Pimlico. He continued to travel the world through his work with the civil service with Mary Ann by his side on many of those trips. He retired once again in 1994 and enjoyed the next 29 years golfing, spending time with his family, watching the Clemson Tigers and Atlanta Braves and "piddling" around his house and dock. His "love language" was acts of service. He would do anything for anyone and was constantly helping other people. He spent many hours at his church doing anything that needed to be done. He loved attending the "Man Club" meetings and attending Sunday and Wednesday night services. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, making them feel that they were the most important person in the room. He was kind to everyone and truly respected everyone. He loved the Lord and spent many hours reading and studying his Bible.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Parker Snipes, his daughter Janis Anderson (Jack), her children Brandon Lutes (Carrie), Megan Lecholop (Kinon), and Ashlynn Anderson (Matt) and son Jim Snipes, Jr (Amy), his children Caitlyn Carson (Charlie) and Lindsay Wilson (Matt). He has 6 great-grandchildren Anderson Lutes, Grayson Lutes, Davidson Lutes, Colton Lecholop, Reade Lecholop and Saylor Thacker. He is also survived by his stepchildren, whom he loved as his own. Mr. Snipes' funeral service will be 12:00 PM Thursday, October 12, 2023, in the Berkeley Baptist Church, Moncks Corner. Interment will be 1:00 PM Friday afternoon, October 13, 2023, in the Lancaster Memorial Park, Lancaster, SC, with military honors, directed by Dial-Murray Funeral Home, Moncks Corner.
