He joined Capt. Smyth's Co., Partisan Rangers, also known a Capt. Smyth's Command of Cavalry, the same unit as his older brother Anthaires joined a year earlier. The unit eventually became Co., D, Wood's Regiment, Confederate Cavalry. Henry was captured at Vicksburg on July 04, 1863, was paroled and exchanged, then rejoined Wood's Regt. Cav., which surrendered in 1865.
