R. Gehrig Dies; Rites Wednesday

Funeral service for Robert E. (Boy) Gehrig, 77, of 1509 N. Eighth street, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Preston Funeral Home.

Rev. Frederick Cramer, associate pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery.

Friends may call at Preston's from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Mr. Gehrig died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, 1978, in his home, after having been in ill health since 1972.

Born at Pekin May 24, 1900, he was the son of Charles F. and Anna Turner Gehrig. His marriage was to Edna Nelson, who preceded him in death Jan. 19, 1973.

He attended Pekin schools and was graduated from Bradley Polytechnic Institute at Peoria in 1922. While in high school, he was president of his class and was captain of the track and football teams. He also played semi-professional football at one time, and was an avid bowler.

Mr. Gehrig worked in the family business, Gehrig's Cigar Store, at 316 Court street, and took over operation of the firm in 1941, after the death of his father. He continued to operate the business, which was founded in 1872 (sic - 1865) by his grandfather, a cigar maker, until the building was destroyed by fire May 29, 1971.

Surviving is one daughter, Miss Roberta Gehrig, at home.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
