John Norman Corbin was the son of Earl and Mabel Corbin. Earl was killed during the collapse of Mine No. 9 on Nov. 7, 1926 at the age of 42. Mabel never remarried but continued to raise their only child "Norman." Norman grew up where he was raised. He was viewed to be eccentric around the little town of West Frankfort. But soon Norman's life was to change due to a new neighbor who moved in across the street from him. Mr. Mike Adkins had heard about Norman around town like everyone else, but reached out to "love your neighbor as yourself." This culminated in a life-changing friendship. A few years later, on September 5, 1984 Mike told his story to Dr. James Dobson on Focus on the Family in a radio broadcast. The success of this broadcast and the re-telling of the story led to the production of a film entitled: "A Man Called Norman" released in 1988. The film and radio broadcast have been replayed numerous times since and have touched the lives of many across the nation and the world.
