GREAT-GRANDFATHER (ALLEN)

Rev. Allen, who resided at Deerfield several years ago but who was living on a claim south of Garden City, died of influenza and was buried at Deerfield, Saturday. It is reported that a number of his family are still sick.

James Milton Allen was bort Oct. 16, 1855, and died Dec. 7th 1918, being 63 years, 1 month, 18 days of age. He was born near Monroe, Green County, Wisc.
His father died when he was only 5 years of age, and in 1863 he moved with his mother to Warren Couty, Iowa, and in 1874 they again moved to Smith County, Kans.
He was married to his now bereaved wife, Jennie B. Bloomer, on August 25th, 1878.
He united with the M.E Church at an early age and the greater part of his life was spent in the uplifting of humanity.
Later he went into the ministry and was actively engaged in the gospel ministry for about 15 years. He served as a Methodist minister at Osborne, Beloit, Portis, Salina, Stockton, Gaylord and Ness City, all in Kansas. The last charge, before retiring, was at Deerfield, Kansas.
For the last five years he has been living on a farm 12 miles south of Garden City where he preached in a non-sectarian church.
Three older brothers are still living; they are Rev. E. W. Allen of Topeka, Kans., Rev. W. R. Allen of Portland, Ore., and J. F. Allen of Vinton, Iowa. He is also survived by eight children.
Funeral services were conducted in the M.E. Church at Deerfield by Rev. S. M. Van Cleve, Saturday, Jan. 25, 1919, and the remains were laid to rest in the Deerfield Cemetery.
