About age 12 his family moved to Fulton IL. from Stephenson County IL.

Graduated from Fulton college.

1896 entered the employ of the Modern Woodmen of America in Fulton and came to Rock Island when the firm moved its main office there.

m. 15 Feb.1909 Rock Island IL.
to Florence L. Goff.

Mar. 1950 retired after 48 years of service with the Rock Island post office. He served under four postmasters as a general utility clerk and in numerous capacities. He was appointed as special clerk and served as secretary of the civil service board for 23 years. As supervisor of mails he served under the late Harry P. Simpson, postmaster.

Herschel E. Potter of Rock Island died age 73 at Mercy Hospital after a short illness of a heart condition.

Burial was 13 Aug.1954, Memorial Park cemetery [Rock Island]

Survivors: widow;
sons Leslie E. Potter of Chicago and Edward E. Potter in Ypsilanti MI.;
daughter Mrs. L. C. Heitman of Moline;
grandsons Kim Potter and Larry, Gary, and Michael Heitman.

Preceded by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
