Sondra K. Walter, 83, passed away on September 21, 2023, at the Hospice House in Hutchinson, Kansas. Born Sondra Kay Fair on January 12, 1940, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Fred L. and Alma L. (Bennett) Fair. Sondra was raised in Alden, Kansas, along with her three sisters. She graduated from Alden High School in 1958 and Kansas State University in Elementary Education in 1962. She taught in Arvada, Colorado; Manhattan, Kansas; and Lakewood, Colorado before taking time off to raise her three children: Judi, Eric and Clay. She resumed her career in 1979, teaching 6th grade for 23 years at Meade (Kansas) Elementary School before retiring in 2002. She married Larry Joe Walter from Dighton, Kansas, on January 12, 1963. The family lived in Lakewood, Colorado; Turon, Kansas; Baxter Springs, Kansas and Meade, Kansas. Sondra moved to Sterling, Kansas after Joe's death in 2013. Sondra is survived by her children: Judi (Terry) Sickler, Kearney, Nebraska; Eric (Crystal) Walter, Clearwater, Kansas; and Clay (Becky Hall) Walter, Wichita, Kansas. Seven grandchildren: Vince (Mallory) Sickler; Claire (Dillon) Sempek; Hannah (Jared Smalley) Sickler; Joseph Walter; Jacob Walter; Benjamin Walter and Jack Walter. Two great grandchildren: Gianna and Kennedy Sickler. Two sisters: Janiece Rowland, Sterling, Kansas, and Arlene (Terry) Drach, Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Aunt: Barb Hoffman, Lindsborg, Kansas. Eleven nieces and nephews, and many other friends and family. She was proceeded in death by her mother and father; sister Kathryn Fair; brothers-in-law Chuck Rowland, Raymond Ellis and Gene Lewis; and sisters-in-law Twila Ellis and Susan Lewis. Sondra was a member of the Alden Baptist Church, P.E.O. Chapter W, assistant treasurer of the Alden Baptist Church and treasurer of American Baptist Women (ABW). She enjoyed her family immensely and will be remembered for making Christmas extra special. Heaven has gained a witty, smart and generous angel. She will be deeply missed. Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at the Alden Baptist Church, Alden, Kansas, with Pastor Matt Hendricks officiating. A private family burial will be held at the Alden Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Friends of Animals Rice County (Cat Rescue Fund) or Alden Baptist Church (Chair Lift Fund) in care of Birzer Funeral Home, 203 N 7th St., Sterling, KS 67579.
