Prior to his military service, Carl attended University of Kansas where he was a brother of the Kansas Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) Fraternity, a member in ROTC, and graduated with the Class of 1929. A 1948 military registry show that he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army Reserve Corps of Engineers in 1931, and was serving as a Captain in the Army Reserve when he was brought on active duty in NOV 1940. Before his retirement in DEC 1960, Carl served in Army Air Forces during World War II, and the Air Force in the Korean War.
