Devoted and loving mother, Mary Ruth (Butler) Friedhoff Paulen, 81, passed away in Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio on July 20, 2005 after a short illness.

Born in Akron, a daughter of Arthur and Sarah Butler, she served as a US Navy WAVE from 1945 until 1949. Mary was a founding member of the first Akron Chapter of Parents Without Partners, serving as the secretary at the inception of Akron Nutrition Program, which later became Mobile Meals. Prior to that, she worked for Community Action Council in Akron. In addition to her commitment to work with non-profit service programs, Mary was an avid reader, talented seamstress, and created many beautiful pieces of needlework art.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by first husband, Donald L. Freidhoff; and husband, Howard 'Howy' Lewis Paulen, whom she married in 1974. Howy passed away in 1992; and sisters, Laura and Virginia.

She leaves her sister, Alice Casto; three children; a step-son; plus grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many dear friends.

A memorial service will be held Monday, August 8 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church on West Market St in Akron.
