Harvard "Harv" Smart

(January 26, 1912 - November 5, 2010)

Harvard Smart
passed away on Friday November 5, 2010, after a brief illness. He was 98 years old.

Harvard was born on January 26, 1912 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to William James and Johanna "Honey" Hoornstra Smart. He had four siblings: two brothers, Clifford and Lorne and two sisters, Della and Mildred. Harvard was predeceased by his parents, William and Johanna; his wife, Dimple; a son, Thomas as well as his four siblings. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Whitmyer of Petoskey and Jennifer (Earl) Kilander of Gouverneur, NY; eight grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

He completed his education at Kalkaska High School. He was married to Ruth "Dimple" Wells in Petoskey on September 24, 1938. After a brief honeymoon in Sault Ste. Marie, they returned to Petoskey to make their home together for 69 years.

Harvard and Ruth belonged to the Presbyterian Church and Bay View Country Club. They had many enjoyable retirement years spending winters in Florida and summers at home in Petoskey. They traveled extensively throughout North America with close friends. They especially enjoyed an RV trip from Florida to California, Vancouver and across northern Canada and the US to home in Petoskey. They also journeyed to Spain, Switzerland, Panama and the Virgin Islands.

Harvard worked for the state as Area Supervisor for the M.E.S.C. He retired in January of 1977. Harvard's gifts were his people skills. He's favorite role was as grandfather and great grandfather. His greatest gift was his magnetism with children. Whether related or not; all children wanted to climb into his lap or grab his nose.

He loved playing golf, traveling, family and friends. It was important to him to stay in touch with his extended family and friends. He loved telling stories about old times with family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Petoskey at 11 am on Wednesday November 10, 2010. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Tuesday November 9, 2010 at the Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family wishing to honor Harvard with a memorial contribution are asked to consider the First Presbyterian Church of Petoskey, Bortz Health Care of Petoskey or a charity of your choosing.
