"On another farm in the Upper Sugar Bush, a settler named Adnah Newton first realized that the woods fires were out of control when he heard a distant roaring that grew rapidly closer and louder . . . he decided that the barn might offer more protection than the house . . . He herded his wife into it, along with their fourteen-year-old granddaughter, Augusta Bartels, and Mrs. Newton's eighty-four-year-old mother, Mrs. Sally McPherson . . . Certain that the barn would soon catch fire, he ordered everyone outside. Mrs. Newton and Augusta took off across a field. Mrs. McPherson, too old and weary to flee even for her life, lingered near the barn . . . her body was found near the barn the next day" (Embers of October by Robert W. Wells; p. 78).
