One of the neighbors reported that they had heard a report of a gun sometime about 9 o'clock and another about 1 o'clock Monday night. As such reports were frequently heard no attention was paid to it. It is supposed the first shot caused the death of Mrs. Yates the second that of her husband.
The couple had lived alone and were to some extent dependent on aide from the county, as they were on the list of outdoor poor and were paid a small sum from county funds each month.
Corner Davis summoned a jury and held a inquest over the two dead bodies, the verdict being that Mrs. Yates had been murdered and that Mr. Yates committed suicide.
The following citizens formed the jury: Dr. F. P. Harben, R. L. Hancock, S. H. Rainwater, J. G. Johnson, W. E. Hathaway and A. M. Hathaway.
The burial of the aged couple took place at Tabernacle Cemetery six miles west of Sandersville Wednesday afternoon.
