Don was born in Carrier Mills, IL on January 19, 1932. He was the son of Floyd Gowins and Dorothy Bainbridge. Don was a graduate of Carrier Mills High School. After high school, Don proudly served his country in the Navy for 8 years. He served during the Korean Conflict. Don married Jenny Jamerson in Carrier Mills Methodist parsonage on October 13, 1950. Upon discharge, he became employed by Sahara Coal Company and continued his mining career in Poteau, OK. When he returned to IL, he was employed by SIU Carbondale where he worked in inventory accounting until his retirement.
Don was a member of the First Methodist Church in Carrier Mills. He was an active member of the Methodist men and the church. He always looked forward to coffee and donuts in the fellowship cafe before church. Don loved to study his Bible and visit with his friends. Don especially loved writing his opinions to the Southern Illinoisan newspaper. He was privileged to be chosen for the Honor Flight accompanied by his guardian, Bill Jensik
Visitation will be held from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm Sunday, September 10, 2023 at the First Methodist Church in Carrier Mills. Funeral services will follow at 1:30 pm with Rev. Chris Wise officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery in Carrier Mills with military rites by the Navy ritual team and the Carrier Mills and Harrisburg American Legions.
