Thomas Hord Herndon married first to his cousin Elizabeth Brock, by whom he had one child, Joseph, who died an infant.
He went to Alabama about 1819 where he married his second wife on 2 May 1822 in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Eutaw, Greene County, Alabama: Emma Sarah Toulmin, daughter of Hon. Harry Toulmin, first President of Transylvania University in Kentucky, first Secretary of State of Kentucky, and first federal judge of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

In 1828 they lived at Erie, then Greene County but now in Hale County.

Mrs. Emma Herndon married (2) on 1 Dec 1846 at the Herndon home, Erie, Greene, AL, John H. Copp from Boston, born c1808 in MA.

Thomas Hord Herndon Sr. was a third cousin of Dr. Willis Roberts of Mobile who was a son of Mary Herndon and helped select the site of the first Alabama state capitol at Cahawba, Dallas County, Alabama.
