Violet Roberts Armstrong Davidson, the 80 year old widow of the last State Journal-Register publisher James E Armstrong, died Tuesday at Memorial Medical Center.

She married James Armstrong in 1940, the year he was named city editor of Illinois State Register. They are survived by two children, John R Armstrong and Diane Armstrong O'Connor, both of Springfield.

She was born Violet Robert in 1915 in Eldorado, the youngest of three children of Reese and Iva Roberts. Her father died when she was small, and Iva Roberts brought her family to Springfield for work.

Mrs Davidson met James Armstrong while they both attended Springfield High School in the 1930's; he was already working at the Register as a sports reporter.

After graduating high school, Mrs Davidson took community college business courses.

In 1936, Armstrong joined the paper's advertising staff and was soon transferred to the editorial department. World War II interrupted his career, but after service in Europe, he returned to the city editor's post and became managing editor in 1950. He was named publisher of The State Journal-Register in 1964, succeeding retiring publisher Jack Heintz.

Armstrong died of a heart attack in 1968. Mrs Davidson married John N Davidson, an engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation, in 1978. Davidson died in July.

Mrs Davidson was a homemaker throughout her life and served in several civic groups. She was on the board of the Rees Carillon Society and was a charter member and president of the Carillon Bells. She was a past member of the Springfield Women's Club and was active with the Civic Garden Club, the Springfield Art Association, the Girl Scouts, the American Red Cross and the March of Dimes.

She also served on the board of the James E Armstrong Scholarship Fund at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

Mrs Davidson is also survived by a stepson, John "Chip" Davidson of Springfield; two stepdaughters, L Gay Davidson of Springfield and Jill Ludwig of Minonk; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday from 11am until services begin at 1pm at Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S Koke Mill Road. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
