Mr. Cutting came here to reside in 1861 and his business career extended over half a century, during which time he had relations with two or three generations who have been active in the building up of Gouverneur. He was in the hardware business during the Civil war and witnessed the development of the lumber, talc, iron ore and paper industries and secured the bulk of the trade from these concerns through his knowledge of his trade and strict business integrity. During this time Gouverneur more than doubled in population and the banking resources grew from a few thousand dollars to three or four million.

Mr. Cutting was identified with many organization which had to do with the building up of the social and commercial life of the town. In 1866 he was active in the building of the Trinity church and was the first person to be confirmed in the new edifice and also served as one of the first wardens and ever after served the church faithfully in different positions and contributed liberally to its support.

Mr. Cutting was a thirty-third degree Mason, a member of all the Masonic bodies and of Media Temple, order of the Mystic Shrine. For many years he gave considerable of his time to the up-building of Masonery in this section. He was one of the five members who contributed $200 each, making the first thousand dollars that was raised towards the purchase of the Deacon Thayer property upon which the Masonic Temple was built.

In the early days of the Gouverneur Agricultural and Mechanical society, Mr. Cutting served as secretary for four years from 1863 to 1867. He also served on the Board of Directors. He served as trustee of Gouverneur village, foreman of the Fire Department, trustee of the Cemetery Association in which he took great interest, in fact, Mr. Cutting was one of those public spirited men who took an interest in the welfare of the town and was always ready to contribute of his time and resources towards its growth and development.

Mr. Cutting was born in Pierrepont, NY, Feb 2, 1836, a son of Daniel Cutting, who was born in Canada in 1808 and Jane Barrows, who was born in Canton in 1810. He commenced his business career in Gouverneur in 1861.

He was married to Ellen M. Barnes of Canton in 1860. Four children were born to them, John who died in 1875 at the age of eleven years, Hattie who died a few years after, Mrs. Henry Homer who resides in New York, and Herbert, who for many years had been connected with the Woolworth Co. in New York and has a home at Montclair, NJ.

After Mrs. Cutting's death which occurred in Gouverneur several years ago, Mr. Cutting went to reside with his son and it has been a great comfort to his friends to know that he was surrounded by children and grandchildren who were so attached to him and made his last days happy. He will be missed in that home where he had such tender care and all the comforts that could be wished for.

Funeral services were held from Trinity church last Sunday afternoon, Rev. William A. Braithwaite officiating. The church was filled and over a hundred Masons were present and conducted the services at Riverside.
