True Love Defeats Parent's Stern Hand, Irate Father Arrives in Washington Just Too Late to Prevent Daughter's Marriage - Back of the marriage of Miss Annie Sheffley to John Chinn, of 407 Eleventh Street, Northwest, lies a little story of the romantic attachment of youthful lovers, the flight of the young woman from the parental home in Vienna, Va., to meet her husband-to-be in Washington, an irate father in hot pursuit, and an ending with "Bless you, my children," and everybody happy all around. The couple had been lovers from childhood, but the parents frowned on the attachment because of the youth of the pair. The lovers were not deterred by a little thing like that, so Miss Sheffley boarded a train unknown to her parents in Vienna, and was soon speeding toward Washington, where Mr. Chinn anxiously awaited her. Her father, who is one of Vienna's leading business men, followed on the next train, but when he arrived here Tuesday he could not find either his daughter of Mr. Chinn. He finally located them, yesterday, at 940 E. Street, Northwest, just as the words that united them were spoken by the Rev. Samuel Green. Mr. Sheffley bowed gracefully to the situation, and after bestowing his blessing on the happy couple, retuned to Vienna. [Published in the Washington Post, 1908]

Mrs. Annie R. McCurdy, wife of Arthur McCurdy, of 325 Locust Street, Palmyra, died Tuesday evening at 11:50 o'clock in the Keystone Hospital, Harrisburg, where she was admitted in the afternoon of the same day. Although in failing health for the past eight years, her condition was not serious until Monday. Death was attributed to complications. Had she lived until September, Mrs. McCurdy would have been forty-seven years of age. She was born at Lima, Ohio, the daughter of Andrew C. Shifflet. With the exception of the past thirteen years when she resided in Palmyra, Mrs. McCurdy was a resident of Maryland during the greater part of her life. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Her former husband was John Chinn. A daughter, Mrs. Harry Bricker, preceded her mother in death last January. The survivors are her husband, Arthur McCurdy; and these children, Wayne Chinn, of Palmyra; Mrs. Louise Cline, of Ohio; Alfred Chinn, at home, and Kathryn McCurdy, at home. Four step-children, Arthur, Claude and Robert McCurdy, at home, and Susan McCurdy, of Hershey; two sisters and a brother, Mrs. W. D. Kline, of Palmyra; Mrs. Ira Miller, of Vienna, Virginia, and Rawleigh Shifflet, of Riverdale, Maryland; and four grandchildren also survive. [Lebanon Daily News, August 7, 1935, Page 4]
