Hedy Lee Emerson Webster
December 3, 1941 - August 17, 2023
West Columbia, South Carolina - Hedy Lee Emerson Webster, also known as Lee, Angel, Hedy, Mom, Mama, Mother, Aunt Hedy, LeeLee, Mrs. Webster, and Miss Hedy, passed away Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023.
Born Dec. 3, 1941 to Howard M. and Johnnie Mae Emerson, she was the youngest of 8 children and affectionately known as "Lee" to her siblings.
Hedy grew up in Columbia, attending Snyder Grammar School and Hand Middle School. She graduated from Dreher High School in 1960 where she made many lifelong friends. In recent years, she loved her role of coordinating the frequent luncheons with the "Dreher Ladies" that are still ongoing. To those friends and many others, she was "Hedy."
Nieces and nephews came along soon – 18 of them over the years - and they all loved "Aunt Hedy." She was like a big sister to many of them.
In November of 1961, she married Larry James Webster, and their entire married life, cards and letters he wrote and every birthday cake he ordered for her attested to the fact that she was his "Angel."
Hedy and Larry had four amazing children and to them she was "Mom", "Mama" and "Mother" and Mother Dearest." Her involvement in their lives had a lasting impact on them. She served as homeroom mom, den mother, youth department volunteer, and much more as she modeled for them the importance of education, family and above all, faith. The family moved frequently with stops in Charleston, Elizabeth City, Norcross, St. Simons Island, Columbia, St. Louis, and Bermuda.
Hedy had a great life outside the family as well. She worked at her family's bakery early in her marriage. She worked at JM Fields in Charleston, and as a substitute teacher for more than a decade years at Fulmer middle school. And she volunteered with Springdale Baptist Church children's ministry and bible club.
To her seven grandchildren, she was "LeeLee." She adored them all and was very proud of them and their accomplishments. From musical and theatrical performances, baseball and soccer games, high school and college graduations, new jobs and military enlistment, LeeLee was there. But most of all, she loved talking to them.
Of all of the relationships in her life, her relationship with Jesus was most important to her. She was a lifelong member of Shandon Baptist Church first attending the "cradle roll" at eighteen months old. She was always active in Sunday School and loved participating in church activities. She always made sure her children knew the importance of being in church and developing a relationship with Jesus. She was fortunate to see all them accept Jesus as their savior. And all of her grandchildren have come to know and love Jesus as well.
One of Hedy's favorite places was Folly Beach. Family vacations there started when she was a child and she continued that tradition with her own family. She also enjoyed playing cards and board games, watching old movies (and Perry Mason and Murder She Wrote), attending lunches with the Garden Club and with childhood friends. She loved cooking her specialities - spaghetti, biscuits with chocolate gravy, and pound cake.
She loved to travel to Bermuda, Sweden, Germany and Israel. At 80, she and several of her friends went to Greece and made the hike to the Parthenon.
She was an avid Clemson fan, loved Elvis, family reunions and the Columbia Fireflies. She was a season ticket holder and was known as "Miss Hedy" by players, coaches, staff and other fans throughout the ballpark.
In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her husband, Larry James Webster, Sr., seven siblings; Benjamin David Emerson, Betty E. Smith, Edna Derelle Bigby, Vera Joy Emerson, Howard Emerson, Jr., Richard Riley Emerson and Agnes Juanita McDonald. She is survived by her children; Larry J. Webster, Jr. (Julie) of Columbia, Johnny H. Webster (Jennifer) of Ft. Mill, Wendy D. Webster, of West Columbia, and Courtney Webster Fuller (Jamie) of Charleston; seven grandchildren; Alex, Ashton, Spencer and Nicolas Webster, Jackson (Ashlyn), Thomas and Walker Fuller; many nieces and nephews; extended family members; and many, many dear friends.
Visitation will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2023. Funeral will be at Shandon Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 26, 2023 with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
