Fenton youth collapses, dies while chasing turkeys

A 16-year-old rural Fenton boy was herding a flock of turkeys that had wandered onto a neighbor's land, Thursday evening so he could participate in Sentral Community School's homecoming activities.

Dean Cody never made it.

The youth -- an active, healthy boy who played on the school's football, basketball and baseball teams -- died of a ruptured aorta near his parents' farm northwest of Fenton.

"He was over at the neighbor's and his mother, was with him, and they were chasing the turkeys home," said Gerald Cody, the boy's father. "The neighbor said she saw him fall, and she didn't think too much of it."

He said his wife, Sylvia, was driving ahead of Dean Cody when the neighbor, Joan Waite, 45, said Dean Cody had fallen.

"When she [Sylvia Cody] saw him in the ditch, she thought he broke his leg or something, and she looked over at him and said something to him," Gerald Cody said. "But he looked straight ahead and didn't say anything, then she said something else, and he gasped for breath and passed away."

Waite said she was driving to the pep assembly at the school when she saw Cody in the ditch chasing the birds. She stopped her car to help and saw Cody collapse.

"He just went down, and I thought he tripped or something," Waite said. "But I guess that wasn't it at all. I didn't know what happened. I was driving to the pep rally, and I saw him and I thought I'd help him."

Waite called an ambulance, then returned to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but Cody didn't respond. "I just went through one sequence and I was checking for a pulse when the ambulance came," she said.

He was taken to Fairmont Community Hospital in Fairmont, Minn., where he was pronounced dead about 7:05 p.m. Thursday, said Roger Ulses, a member of the Fenton Fire Department. Ulses said an autopsy performed Friday by the Hennepin County medical examiner's office in Minneapolis revealed that Cody died of a ruptured aorta.

Dean Cody, a junior, played tight end for the Sentral of Fenton Satellites. The homecoming game against Lincoln-Central of Gruver was Friday night. He also played the trumpet in band and was in the National Honor Society.

"He never was sick in his life," his father said. "He was playing football all the time, and was going to play volleyball that night."

His brother, Dwayne, 23, a senior at Grand View College in Des Moines, said: "I was really stricken; it's hard to explain the way I felt. We used to horse around with each other and all that stuff, but I haven't seen him that much since I've been away at college. The last time I saw him was at my grandma's funeral on Sept. 12."

Services for Dean Cody, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church at Depew, with burial in the town cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday at Henry and Olson Funeral Home in Fenton.
