Stephen H. Fonda Sr.

Holland Patent, NY

Stephen H. Fonda Sr. passed away on August 28, 2023 of natural causes at the age of 68. He was born and raised in Whitesboro, NY and was the son of William Fonda and June Fonda (nèe Wiggins). Steve graduated from Whitesboro High School and received an electronics degree from Syracuse University. He was married to Barbara Fonda in 1979 and they had two kids together, Dr. Jennifer R. Fonda (1980) and Stephen H. Fonda Jr. (1983). Steve was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Holland Patent.

Steve had a strong work ethic and never took a sick day. When he put his mind on something he would do anything to accomplish it. Steve's first job was serving as a bat boy at the age of 8 for a nationally known baseball team and he was proud to be paid with an orange soda. He served in the Navy from 1978 to 1983. Steve worked as a field technician for 40 years, starting at New Channels in 1985.

Steve was happiest and most at peace in nature. He shared his love of nature with his kids and granddaughter. Steve loved to go camping, fishing, and swimming at High Falls in West Canada and North Lake. He also loved spending time in the Adirondacks, 1,000 islands, Niagara Falls, and Lake Placid.

Steve was a singer and song writer, writing over 100 original songs. His musical career developed at an early age, and he played out live for over 50 years. He developed himself from a very strong musical community. Steve brought joy to everyone through music and was inspirational with their dreams. He performed out live with both his daughter, son, and granddaughter at a young age, and continued to bring music into their lives. Steve also encouraged other musicians to be their best and to achieve their dreams. He had many musical talents; his singing would calm your soul, his flute play would give you goose bumps, and his skillful guitar play was hard to follow as he played a right-handed guitar upside down. Steve utilized his musical talents to raise substantial amounts of money for charitable organizations, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, various children's organizations, nursing homes, veterans groups, and also played Amazing Grace on his flute for the Cancer Run and Walk in Rome, NY.

Steve was a star varsity wrestler at Whitesboro High School. He went to the NY State Championship and was so close to winning the title, losing only at the last second. He also loved hiking, taking long bike rides, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, speed-skating, and cross-country skiing. Steve enjoyed coaching his son's little league team for many years. Additionally,

Steve was a HYUUUUGE sports fan and loved Syracuse University football and basketball (GO 'CUSE!), Boston University hockey (BC SUCKS!), New York Yankees, and Buffalo Sabres. But his biggest love of all was The Bills. GO BILLS! #BillsMafia

Steve had a big personality, known for his huge smile and great sense of humor. He was always a 4-year-old at heart. Steve brought life and laughter to any situation. He always loved playing with his kids, nieces and nephews, and granddaughter.

Steve continually came up with new dad jokes and loved to name all of his plants (Goldie Hawn, Barbara Bush, Robert Plant, and Spidey) and appliances (George Washingmachine, Richard Dryer, and blower-upperrrrrrrrrrrr).

Stephen Fonda is survived by his daughter Jennifer Fonda, son Stephen Fonda Jr, niece Kristeen Fonda, granddaughter Quinn Fonda, brothers Mark, Matt, and Keith Fonda, sisters Kimberly Fonda and Kelly Parker (nèe Fonda). He was predeceased by his sister Dr. Shirley Fonda, mother June Fonda, father William Fonda, and brother William (Billie) Fonda.

Steve had a big heart and was loved by all. He brought laughter, love, and charisma to any environment that he was involved in. Steve was always willing to drop everything to help anyone in need. He was a strong role model for his kids, nieces and nephews, and granddaughter. He proudly mentored so many co-workers and developed and inspired talented young musicians.

Calling hours will be on Saturday, September 9th from 1-4pm. The celebration of life is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, October 29th. In lieu of flowers you can donate in his honor to Golisano Children's Hospital www.urmc.rochester.edu/childrens-hospital.aspx, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation cff.org/give-monthly, the ASPCA aspca.org, or a charity of your choice.
