He and a friend saw action at Vicksburg, Mississippi, where the friend was killed. The bereaved fiancee, Jane Woodruff, became Joseph's bride. The Barton family was very prominent in the area, raising four sons and a daughter. A son, Elmer, homesteaded on Horse Creek on the Imnaha. At the mouth of the Imnaha, he and Bart Hibbs discovered copper in June of 1899.

Another son, Ralph, homesteaded in Hells Canyon. A mountain below the dam is named in his honor. He married Lenora Hibbs. The bought the T. F. Rich place on Grouse Creek, which they sold to Billy Warmock and bought the Himelwright place on Summit Creek.

Their children were frequent participants in races at the County Fair. Two of Joseph's great grandsons still live in Wallowa County.
