He served in the 38th Regiment NC Troops, Company I.
He was present until he was wounded in the right foot at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863. He was captured and hospitalized at David's Island, New York Harbor on or about July 19, 1863. He died at David's Island on July 21, 1863 of "pyemia" -blood poisoning.

I. 38" N.C.T. that William Grigg was also a member of said Company that the said William Grigg was wound (sic) on the 1st day of July 1863 at the battle of Gettysburg Pa by having his right foot torn off, affiant never saw him after that but was informed and believes he died of wound soon thereafter on his way back to va, affiant further says he has no interest in this claim for pension.
