Alfred served as a Corporal in the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company C (Civil War).

Alfred was the son of Daniel Caraher (1798-1869) & Catharine (Weight/Waite) Caraher (1796-1849). They are buried in Cross Roads Cemetery, Warriors Mark, Huntingdon Co., PA. Albert was married on October 28, 1856, in Huntingdon Co. to Elizabeth Jane Shannon (1831 - 1917). They had eight children, two of whom are on other sides of the obelisk tombstone with Alfred: Hannah Caraher, d. Jan 14, 1874, Aged 4 yrs. & James M. Caraher, d. Feb 21, 1876, Aged 18 yrs., 1 mo.
