Joy Magdalene Brugman (Bump) (Edwards) 79, of Talala, Oklahoma, entered into her heavenly home on Saturday, Aug 19, 2023 surrounded by those she loved.
Joy was born on Christmas day in 1943 in Claremore, Oklahoma to Hershell and Annie Bell Bump. She was the youngest of seven children. Joy grew up in Claremore, attending Tiawah schools during her elementary years. Later years were spent at Sequoyah and Foyil Schools. Joy married right out of high school and had two sons, Joe & Rocky, and one daughter, Patti. She made a home on Talala Creek where she raised her family, making many happy memories hunting, fishing, camping, and being involved with the Chelsea United Pentecostal Church. In 1983, Joy started college and graduated from Northeastern State University with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She returned to her alma mater in Foyil and began teaching 3rd grade. In 1993, Joy moved to Fairbanks, Alaska where she met the love of her life, Glenn Brugman. The two were married on September 19, 1995 and moved to Green Valley, Arizona to take care of Glenn's aging parents. They eventually made their way back to Oklahoma to be with family and grandchildren. Upon returning to Oklahoma, Joy returned to Foyil and taught 2nd and 3rd grade until her retirement in 2010.
Joy loved to sing and play the piano. Anytime there was a family get together, it always ended up with an impromptu jam session. She was always at the center of it singing and encouraging anyone to get an instrument and join in. She loved to make up her own lyrics and add "doop to doos" when she ran out of words. Upon retirement, her and Glenn traveled the country riding 4 wheelers and seeing the wonderful beauty of God's creation. Every summer, the family would meet up in Colorado and ride, camp out, and make wonderful memories together. She was always cooking on these outings, making everyone's favorite meals. Her joy was having her family together. Her favorite places were Creede, Pitkin, and Taylor Park, Colorado. Joy had a soft spot for animals. She traveled with her two small dogs, Ebbie and Emma until their passing. She recently adopted Izzy and Sammie into her home to love. She delighted in planting flowers every spring and always bought way more than she needed. Her favorites were daffodils, pansies, lobelia, and sunflowers. Her porch was always decorated with the most beautiful flower arrangements welcoming family and friends into her home.
Her favorite hobby was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her world and she never missed an opportunity to sing their praises. She loved having family get-togethers and cooking big meals for everyone to celebrate. Joy enjoyed playing all types of games with family, making sure everyone had fun and laughing the whole time. She made everyone in the family feel loved and accepted.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Hershell and Annie, and her siblings; Albert (Soggy) Bump, Ivonne (Sissy) Dick, Hershell (Buck) Bump, Jo Faught, Jean Pearson, and Lawrence Bump. Joy is survived by her loving husband, Glenn Brugman of Talala, Children; Joe Edwards and wife, Kim of Talala, Rocky Edwards and wife, Teresa of Jenks, and Patti Berkley and husband, T.J. of Talala. Grandchildren; Brandon, Courtney, Justin, Brock, Jaime Edwards, and Dillon, Andrea, and Hannah Berkley. Five great granddaughters, Tinley, Rhiley, Everlee, Cheylee, and Josie, and a host of nieces and nephews, and many, many beloved friends.
