Son of Arlene Akins Lanier and James Richard Lanier. He graduated from Jenkins High School in 1963, and attended Belhaven College on a baseball scholarship, graduating in 1967, and where he met Barbara Traylor. They married August 26, 1967, and started their journey together at Columbia Theological Seminary. After his graduation in 1970, He served as pastor of Hartwell Presbyterian Church until January of 1972, when he and Barbara were called to Savannah to teach at Savannah Christian Preparatory School. After organizing student trips to Washington, DC, he started Excursions Unlimited in 1979, which continues as pat of Kelly Tours. He leaves his wife of 57 years, Barbara; daughter, Mandi Lanier; grandchildren, Piper, Isabel, and Forest Lanier; sisters, Janie Up De Graff (Mo) - his twin, and Rose Bryan (Paul); brother, Keith Lanier (Beth); two brothers-in-law, Sam Traylor and Tommy Cheves; and eleven nieces and nephews, Christy, Rebecca, Nick, Debbie, Stacey, Stephen, Shannon, Jonathan, Josh, Kyle, and Emily.
