Debbie graduated from Holcomb High School in 1991 and attended college at Fort Hays State University. She moved back to Holcomb and became a dispatcher with the Garden City Police Department. She moved with the family to Osawatomie, Kansas and began working as a dispatcher with the Miami County Sheriff's Office. As her health started to fail, she would work as a manager at Dairy Queen and other jobs as she was able.
Debbie had one daughter, Avree, in 2004. She raised her as a single mother and Avree was the light of her life. Debbie's granddaughter, Braylee, was born in 2022. Debbie adored Braylee. She loved taking her outside and playing with her. Debbie would sneak her snacks when she knew Braylee wasn't supposed to have them. Rocky Road ice cream was their favorite to share together. Debbie got to spend 18 months loving her before passing away suddenly on August 18, 2023 in Paola, Kansas.
Debbie enjoyed the time spent with her family. After her parents moved away from Osawatomie, she would make frequent trips to see them and there were regular phone calls to keep in touch. She helped her daughter participate in pageants when she was young and then, when Avree got involved in sports, she was an involved parent in all of her activities.
Debbie believed in taking responsibility for her mistakes, making amends, and looking forward. She loved helping in charity fundraisers, especially diabetes research, and tried to make the world a better place. She never lost the ability to laugh at herself.
Debbie's last few years were hard for her as she dealt with her own health, the passing of both her parents, and her sister, Lorna. Not long before her passing, she related a dream to one of her sisters where she walked into her house and there at the kitchen table sat all three of her parents, Patty, Rocky, and John. She asked them what they were doing there. They answered, "Waiting for you." We imagine now that she has pulled up a chair and she is sitting there with them and Lorna. They are telling jokes, inappropriate stories about each other, and laughing loudly. I'm sure they are saving a place for us.
