Sharla was born on October 4, 1945, to Glenice and Stanley Anderson. She was the third oldest of her five sisters, Cora Ley, Ellen, Sharla, Reva, and Eunice. Sharla was raised in Independence, Idaho. Her father was a farmer, and her mother was a homemaker and school teacher.

Sharla always loved to draw, science, and cats. She was also a hard worker on her father's farm. She also had a huge imagination and loved to tell stories.

Later, in 1971 or so, she met the love of her life, Robert Lichtenberg. They started dating, and in 1972 they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. She moved out east to Arlington, Virginia, for a while and had her first son, Kirk. Later, she and Robert moved back to Idaho and had their second son, Stanley.
