The community was shocked of the death of one of its highly respected citizens - Fount F. Hurst, who had suffered a heart attack the day before. He was taken to Memorial hospital where he was placed in an oxygen tent but he could not survive and passed away the next day. Fount was a most familiar figure in our community and was down town most every day. He was well known in this part of the state through his interests in the live - stock business.
Fount F. Hurst, the eldest son of Millard F. and Eleanor Elizabeth Huff Hurst, was born September 12, 1873, near Jamestown, Tenn., and passed away at the Winchester hospital September 1, 1956, at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 18 days. He came to Kansas as a boy in 1877, with his father, mother and a baby sister. On May 24, 1911, he was united in marriage with Elva Strawn and since has made his home in Valley Falls. To this union were born three sons.
He was a retired farmer and in past years was widely known as a horse and mule trader. He was mayor of Valley Falls for two terms, was a member of the city council for many years, and was president of the Citizens State Bank at Valley Falls for the past ten years.
Survivors include his wife, Elva, of the home; three sons, Fount M., of Geneva, Ohio, Paul A., of Valley Falls, and Robert K., of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughter-in-law, Martha, Arlene and Irene; two grandsons, Quentin and Jeffery of Valley Falls; four granddaughters, Jayne and Sherri of Geneva, Ohio, Roberta and Candace of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Robert and Prentice of Valley Falls; two sisters, Mrs. Vada McNorton of Valley Falls, and Mrs. Mildred Evans of Kansas City, Mo. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. Millikan. Music was furnished by Mary McCracken and Juanita Barnes, with Vera Lee McGinnis accompanist. Active pallbearers were L. P. Mercier, Roy Bergston, Dale Metzger, H. D. Wyatt, Ted Montgomery and Robert Simpson, and Honorary Pallbearers were Rot Lott, Clyde Brooks, W. I. Thompson, Clyde Glenn, Geroge McCracken, Ben Thornburg, J. W. Mitchell, Charles Gephart, Fred McLeord, Raplh Glenn, E. F. Wettig and Lloyd Estes. Interment was in the Valley Falls cemetery.
