Michael Campbell Abbey, 70, of Slippery Rock (Scott Township, Lawrence County), passed away Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 9, 1940, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Jewell Earl Abbey and Betty K. Knapp. He retired from J & L Steel, Pittsburgh, where he worked for 15 years. He held a number of jobs including construction and as an electrician. He graduated from Baldwin High School in 1959. He served in the National Guard during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the VFW Post 1810 in Pittsburgh. He enjoyed construction, electrical work, hunting and boating. He had formerly enjoyed his work with the Boy Scouts and had been a Scout Master in Butler. Mike's passion was to help people without getting caught. His date of sobriety was Feb. 19, 1986. Survivors include a son, John F. Abbey, of Slippery Rock; and two brothers, Steve B. (Roberta) Abbey, of Mentor, Ohio, and Jay D. Abbey and his fiancee, Kathleen M. Sloss, of Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Nancy Zimmerman. Friends will be received from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock and 10 until the time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment in Mt. Collins Cemetery, Tionesta.
