He was the eighth child and was born in Mayo Township, in Rockingham County, N.C.
He enlisted in Company F of the 45th North Carolina Confederate Infantry soon after the War started.
James was seriously injured at the Battle of Gettysburg in July of 1863, but he recovered sufficiently to rejoin his Company. Once again he was wounded, captured at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse in mid-May of 1864, and spent the remainder of the War in a Northern prison.
After the War, he returned home with rifle balls in his chest and jaw.
He married Eliza on 20 Nov. 1866 and they settled in Intelligence, N.C.
James was a farmer and he and Eliza raised orchids.
They had at least nine children:

James Marshall Sharp fought for the Confedarate States of America in the Civil War. He enlisted in Company F, 45th North Carolina Infantry on Sept 1st, 1862 at the age of 22. On July 1st, 1863 he was wounded at Gettysburg but recovered and rejoined his unit by Nov. 30th, 1863.
He was wounded again and captured at the Battle of Spottslyvania Court House. He returned to duty but was captured March 25th, 1865 at Petersburg.
He was confined to Point Lookout Prison, Maryland where he spent the remainer of the war. He took the Oath of Allegiance on June 20th, 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland.

Elizabeth (Eliza) Merritt Garrett was born on 13 Aug 1845 at Old J. B. Garrett Farm Near Madison, N.C, died on 22 Aug 1938 in Madison, Rockingham Co., N.C and was buried on 24 Aug 1938 at Sardis Church, Madison, N.C. The cause of her death was senility.
