Bob was born in Van Alstyne, Texas on February 11th, 1938, to Lynwood and Ella Ree McKinney. Bob was the first-born son to the couple but not their only one. His younger brother, Carroll died as an infant.

After Bob graduated from Fredrick Douglas High School in Sherman, Texas in 1955, he joined the Wings over Jordan an African American a cappella spiritual choir founded and based in Cleveland, Ohio. He traveled throughout the United States with the group before attending Prairie View A&M to study Early Childhood Education and Development.

In 1960 on March 11th Bob married the love of his life and the woman he would be with for the next 63 years, Altha Fay Fuller of Honey Grove, Texas. Together they raised their 6 children and settled in Van Alstyne, Texas. He made his living as a building contractor for Fox & Jacobs as well as Kaiser Permanente, where he retired from in 1999.

Bob's first love was music, and he was an accomplished musician. As a longtime member of the Eastside Church of Christ he directed and lead the Eastside Church of Christ chorus for years. He also sang at various music venues in the area and was a backup singer for artists such as R.L. Griffin. He enjoyed youth sports and was involved year- around, whether it was umpiring girls' softball or working with the youth summer track program.
