Alan Dale Capehart, aged 76, passed peacefully and comfortably in the early hours of Thursday, February 23rd, 2023 after a short and sudden illness. Dale was born in Huntington, WV on April 17th, 1946 to Jack and Helen (born Maring) Capehart, the youngest of four sons after Jack David, Laurance Bruce, and Albert Nathan Capehart, in order of birth. Dale spent the early years of his life sweeping the walk of his parents' store, Capehart Jewelry, on Chestnut Street in Kenova, WV, for just a nickel, and acquired valuable jewelry and watch repair skills that his wife, daughter, and granddaughter benefited from for many years to come. He attended Marshall University where he studied voice and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1968.
Dale directed choir, and later band, at Ceredo-Kenova High School for many years before finding success in the telecommunications industry. He returned to his love of music when he accepted his dream position as Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church (FPC) in Huntington. He recently retired from FPC on December 31st, 2022 after 35 years of making "Joyful Noise" in services and was named Director of Music Emeritus. Despite his extensive performances singing baritone in the local nursing homes, synagogue, and Marshall University football games, Dale actually loved playing his trombone the most. Dale was an active and outstanding member of the local community, participating in the Ceredo-Kenova Alumni Band and the Ceredo-Kenova Rotary Club.
Dale married the late Victoria Susan Brammell on June 14th, 1969 at the Westmoreland United Methodist Church, and together, they raised three children, Ashley Maring Capehart, Andrew Benjamin Capehart, and Adam Alexander Capehart. Dale lovingly cared for his wife until she passed on September 29th, 2007. He is survived by all three children, along with his granddaughter, Kennedy Victoria Haught, and girlfriend, Gale Neal.
Dale's broad interests made him an expert conversationalist. He was knowledgable in current events and latest science discoveries, tinkered in the HAM radio world, and tended to his prized, in-ground pool. His positions of grill master and meat carver will be sorely missed at every family gathering to come.
Dale was a known jokester and grand storyteller, fondly remembered for convincing his children that sharks swam the Ohio River, and once, bravely fought a minotaur in the woods behind their home in hand-to-hand combat and lived to tell the tale. Dale held the same passion for loving his children, fiercely and steadily, no matter how different their choices and beliefs were from his own. Dale leaves behind a magnificent musical legacy, but his unwavering love, kindness, generosity, and acceptance of anyone who met him is the most lasting.
