Stephen was a Sexton, most likely at the Harford Church which is located on the cemetery grounds.
The definition of Sexton is "title used for a village church official that cares for the property, rings the bells and digs the graves"
That said there is a chance that Stephen dug the grave of his infant grandchild Lillian Pearl Gillett who died in 1886 and is buried in Harford Cemetery and perhaps even his wife's grave too.

Original death date of 28 Apr 1903 has been amended to 28 Jan 1903 per a record found at the Susquehanna County Historical Society and the following obituary.

"S. E. Carpenter, one of the oldest citizens of the town of Harford, died Jan. 28th, 1903, after a few days illness. He was born Aug. 19th 1822, and married Jan. 30th, 1845, Hannah E. Tiffany, who passed away June 14th 1872. Two daughter(s) Mrs. C. H. (Ella Josephine) Birchard of Philadelphia and Mrs. L. M. (Nettie Evaline) Gillett of Thompson; and two sons, Frank E. of Harford and Homer E. of Kingsley; and five grandchildren survive him.
Before his health failed he took a great interest in the township matters and served as Assessor for 19 years, also as Jury Commissioner for two terms,
He was buried in the Harford Cemetery Jan. 30th, just 58 years from the day of his marriage. Rev. Hawkins preached the funeral sermon, Matthew, 28th Chapter and 6th Verse "Come and see the place where the Lord lay."
