Duffie was born on December 1, 1931 to the late Ruth Jones McBryde and the Rev. John Malcolm McBryde in the beautiful town of Fort Defiance, Virginia.
She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1948 and from Mary Baldwin College in 1952 with a B.A. in Biology.
She met Richard ("Dick") Gray at the University of Virginia during her time at Mary Baldwin College. Love and marriage soon followed – as well as two children, Mary Gilchrist and Richard Gray, Jr. They lived in a brick rowhouse in Rodgers Forge, Maryland until 1962, when they moved to the Sparks, Maryland countryside. They resided in a house surrounded by 20 acres along the Gunpowder River, where they shared a life of love and memories for more than 40 years. She moved to Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads in 2011.
Duffie taught second grade at Fifth District Elementary School in Upperco, Maryland for 28 years. She was an amazing teacher who was blessed to be able to teach two generations of children. Over the years her life and heart were filled with so much of what she enjoyed including tennis, bridge, writing, singing in the Choir, dancing with her husband, hosting dinner parties, family celebrations, and more than 50 years of annual trips to Holden Beach, North Carolina with her two sisters and their families.
She was predeceased by Dick – her husband, her friend, her rock, and her love of more than 53 years – her siblings Margaret Patterson, John M. McBryde II, Ruth Hill, Thomas McBryde, and her granddaughter, Kelsey M. Hill.
She is survived by her children Mary Gilchrist Hammond (John) of Baltimore, Maryland, and Richard Watson Gray, Jr. (Michelle) of Charlotte, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Richard E. Gray, Kristen N. Thomas (Zach), and Korie R. Poole; and three great-grandchildren, Parker Watson Hill, Wade Preston Hill, and William Holden Thomas.
