Alvie Ray Lawton was born in Richland Co., WI on May 30, 1884 on the farm homesteaded by his grandparents. He was the older of two sons born to James Welldon and Sarah Elizabeth (Saubert) Lawton.
When he finished school he taught for one year and then attended the short course in agriculture at the University of Madson and became a recognized farm leader, pioneering in the production of Hy-bred seeds and early use of alfalfa. He developed an outstanding Registered Holstein Herd of cattle, which were sold to buyers from many foreign countries.
He helped organize the first electrical cooperative in the U.S. for the benefit of the farmers in the Kickapoo Valley area.
For 40 years he was a director of the Viola State Bank and for many of those years he served as President. He was a 50 year member of the Rockton Masonic Lodge at LaFarge and a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner.
He was a state Assemblyman from 1931-32 from Richland Co. and then became the Farm Editor for the Grant Co. Independent newspaper.
He married Vesta B. Greenwood June 14, 1906 in Reedsburg and to this union four children were born, Dr. James G. Lawton of Viroqua, Harold R. of LaFarge, Robert W. of Sparta, and Gwendolyn Cochran of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In 1956 he and his wife retired to Phoenix, AZ where his wife passed away in 1961.
After a short illness he passed away June 19, 1972 at the age of 88. Internment was in the Resthaven Cemetery in Glendale, AZ.
