William Emerson Farner was born in Oakville, Cumberland County, PA on 11 Jun 1854 to Conrad Farner and Hannah Lydia Naugle.

He married Emma Jane Snoke on 7 Mar 1876 at the home of the bride's father, Sidetown Cumberland Co, PA, by Rev. P. Corl. Their first child was Ida Maud born 9 Sep 1876. On 7 Apr 1879 she gave birth to David Conrad. She died 26 Apr 1879 from what I can only assume were childbirth complications. Their son, David Conrad, died 10 Aug 1879. They are both buried in the Big Spring United Brethren (now UMC) church yard. After the death of his wife and son, Emerson and his young daughter, Maud, moved in with his sister, Susanna, and husband Thomas Carothers.

He married Margaret Ellen "Ella" Morrow 10 Mar 1882. They had Nora 1883; Anna 1885; Velda 1887; Harrison 1889; Ruth Naomi 23 Feb 1892 - 24 Mar 1892; Oscar 1893; and Mary 1894. Ruth is buried in the Big Spring church yard.

He was baptized on 8 May 1896 at Big Spring United Brethren Church by Rev. J. A. Shettel.

In a deed of assignment dated 2 Sep 1901 "owing to sundry losses and misfortune is at present unable to discharge his just debts and liabilities and is willing to assign all his property for benefit of his creditors." he turned his property over to G. Arthur Rea. The family moved to Harrisburg, living first on S. 4th Street, then Bailey, and later Regina.

He worked at the steel mill and died after a day's work there on 2 Jul 1925. He is buried along with his second wife in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Newville, Cumberland, PA. His first wife, infant son, and infant daughter are memorialized on the same stone marker.
