Reverend John Woodruff Lane was born in New Jersey in 1832, a son of Hezekiah Woodruff and Catherine Apgar Lane. He married Phoebe Jackson July 20, 1855 at Morrison, Illinois. Reverend Lane and his wife, Phoebe, had three children: Charity Ann, Stephen Woodruff and Charles J. In 1870, Reverend Lane and his family lived in Alton, Illinois. In 1880, the family was living in Kansas. By 1900, they were living in Arkansas. He died at Siloam Springs, Arkansas in 1917.

Enlistment date: August 28, 1862. Enlistment Rank: Chaplain. At the time of his enlistment, he was living at Mount Vernon, Illinois. He mustered out on June 10, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee.

Note: Reverend Lane's wife, Phoebe, was born in Knox County, Ohio. Phoebe and her family (parents and siblings) lived at Morrison, Whiteside County, Illinois as early as 1840. Her parents were Aaron Case and Charity Ann Young Jackson.
