CHARLES RAYMOND "CHARLIE" WILSON --- Services for Charles Raymond Wilson, 79, of Brownsville, TN will be on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Brownsville Funeral Home. Mr. Wilson died Saturday night at Baptist Hospital, Memphis, TN of complications following a stroke. Following the funeral services, Mr. Wilson's interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Brownsville, TN.
Mr. Wilson was born on Apr. 15, 1916 in Deanburg, TN to the late John Atkins Wilson and Lily Bland Wilson Paehler. He was raised in Brownsville, TN and received his education at Haywood High School where he was on the baseball and football teams. Mr. Wilson served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. Following his discharge he was employed as a steel worker for a period of time. He then went to work for Spector Freight Lines where he remained until his retirement in 1981.
On June 29, 1937 Mr. Wilson was married to Zita B. Overton. After living in Trumann, Arkansas and Jackson, Tennessee, they made their home in Memphis, Tennessee where they raised their family. During this time Mr. Wilson served as a deacon and teacher at Buntyn Street Baptist Church and was a coach for Little League for many years. Upon retiring, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson returned to Brownsville, Tennessee where he became a member of Brownsville Baptist Church. Mr. Wilson enjoyed traveling, and with his wife, visited in all of the 48 contiguous states, as well as Canada, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Zita B. Wilson of Brownsville, Tennessee; four sons, Thomas C. Wilson and his wife, Becky of Jackson, Tennessee; Charles Wayne Wilson and his wife, Gail of Conyers, Georgia; John Edward Wilson and his wife, Caroline of Huntsville, Alabama; Robert Bruce Wilson and his wife, Donna of Seymour, Tennessee; a daughter, Glenda Alice Ozier and her husband, David of Jonesboro, Arkansas; nine grandchildren, Kenny Wilson of Conyers, Georgia; Keith Wilson of Kennasaw, Georgia; Mark Ozier and his wife, Lisa of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Laura Thornton and her husband, Tim of Murray, Kentucky; Allen Wilson of Jackson, Tennessee; Andrew and Matthew Wilson of Huntsville, Alabama; Todd and Jennifer Wilson of Seymour, Tennessee; and one great-grandchild, Savannah Thornton of Murray, Kentucky. He also leaves a half-brother, Joseph H. Paehler of Oak Ridge, Tenenssee. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Bertie Wilkes, and a half-brother, Lewis Paehler.
