Joseph J. Church age 88 of Pellston passed away peacefully at home among family on Friday, May 23, 2014.

He was born Joseph John Zakoscielny on March 15, 1926 in Detroit, to Paul and Anna (Gabrych) Zakoscienly. Gifted with an incredible singing voice, Joe sang tenor for a time during the 1940's with the Detroit Opera Company.

He entered service with the United States Navy in July of 1944 and served as a Baker 2nd Class aboard the aircraft carrier USS Randolph. He was honorably discharged in January of 1947.

Following his discharge from active duty, Joe returned to civilian life and to his passion for baking, for a number of years as a master baker, he owned and operated several bakeries. He eventually opened the restaurant which would bear his name, Joe Church's Restaurant & Sugar Shack Donuts which he operated in Roseville for a many years. In 1977 he and his wife Betty bought the Dam Site Inn which they operated together for 15 years. Over the years Joe and Betty were proud to serve an incredibly loyal clientele who to them were more like family than customers. In 1992 they passed on ownership to their daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Ray. Over the years Joe continued to enjoy talking to the customers while dinning at the restaurant especially while surrounded by four generations of his family.

Joe is survived by his loving wife Betty (Vanassche) and by his children and step-children, Robert Church, Randall Church, Richard Church, Sheli Salafia, Joseph (Linda) Hoffman and Pamela (Ray) East; his grandchildren who lovingly referred to Joe as Dzia Dzia include, Andrea and Michael Salafia and Erica and Olivia East. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy (George) Beaves, by several great grandchildren and by many loving nieces and nephews.
