US Congressman. After serving in World War II, he was admitted to the bar in 1950 and began a law practice in Opelika, Alabama. He was Opelika City Judge, 1952 to 1954, Lee County Court of Common Pleas Judge, 1954 to 1958 and Fifth Judicial Circuit Judge of Alabama, 1958 to 1962. In 1965, he was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-ninth Congress and to the thirteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1993. He died of cancer and was Alabama's longest serving congressman.
