Journal Gazette, Saturday, January 5, 2013, Page 24∼Connie J. Davis, 62, of Mattoon, died at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Northwestern Memorial in Chicago, Illinois.
Memorial services honoring her life will be on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, Illinois. Visitation will be from 10:00 -11:30 am with a memorial service at 11:30 am.
Connie was born August 9, 1950 in Mattoon, the daughter of Betty (Huckleberry) and Lowell Davis. She graduated from Mattoon High School and Illinois State University. Connie spent most of her career teaching foreign languages, Spanish and French, in the greater Chicago area. She was an active member of the National Federation of the Blind and always searched for ways to help others. Most recently she participated in the education of medical students at Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. She was very kind, brave and tenacious. Even during her illness, she expressed a desire to serve as a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and to participate in research to discover methods for earlier detection of ovarian cancer.
In addition to her parents, Connie is survived by her brother, Kent (Juanita) of Atlanta GA; greyhound niece and nephews, Shorty, Treat and Roll of Atlanta GA; Aunts Phyllis (Bill) Fuqua of Mattoon IL, and Nance (Roy) Buchanan of Toledo IL; several cousins and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Connie's memory to either the American Cancer Society, or to Southeastern Greyhound Adoption Fundraising (www.greyhoundadoption.org) 4605 Wind Drive, Powder Springs GA 30127.
