The peace that comes from belief in Jesus Christ as Our Savior came to Andy early Friday morning, July 21, 2023, at Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home in Tyler, Texas. Andy was 86 years, 7 months, 2 weeks and 4 days of age.
Andy first attended school in Dodd City in Fannin County where his grandfather and several of his aunts had taught for many years. With the outbreak of World War II and his father's National Guard unit being called to Federal service, Andy, his mother and younger sister Linda Sue moved to Winters, Runnels County, Texas. When his father returned from overseas duty the family had made Winters home. Andy's brother John and sister Cathy were later born there.
During his school days in Winters, Andy formed friendships he treasured for the rest of his life. He especially enjoyed remembering playing football and running track as a Winters Blizzard through his junior year of high school. His favorite high school football story ended with "We're goin' to do it to you again, Spike!" Andy graduated high school in Lovington, New Mexico, in 1955.
On February 22, 1954, while still in high school, Andy joined the Texas Army National Guard in Ballinger, Texas. He served the Guard in several locations and, on completing his service he received an Honorable Discharge on August 4, 1957, in Marshall, Texas. On August 6, 1957, he enlisted in the United States Army in Shreveport, Louisiana. As a proud member of the 101st Airborne Division stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Andy achieved the rank of Specialist E-5, and on completing his service received an Honorable Discharge there on May 9, 1960.
While serving at Fort Campbell, Andy (then known by many as Bob) met and married his former wife Martha Jean Corbin of Clarksville, Tennessee. They had three children, Andy, Lynne, and Lloyd.
For several years Andy worked as an insurance claims adjuster in Tennessee. In 1970 he resigned his position as a Branch Manager for General Adjustment Bureau and moved to Marshall, Texas where he joined his father in the family's printing business.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents, his son Robert Anderson "Andy" Alder II, his daughter Lynn Allison (Alder) Nolan, and his sister Linda Sue (Alder) Bouffard.
He is survived by his former wife Martha Jean (Corbin) Alder of Marshall, Texas; son Llyod Boyce Alder of Marshall, Texas; brother John Yates and his wife Lynda Alder of Edom, Texas, sister Catherine Jane Alder of Fort Worth, eight grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.
At his request, Andy's remains were cremated. A private memorial service will be held at Dodd City Cemetery where his ashes will be buried at a time yet to be decided.
The Alder family thanks Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home in Tyler, Texas, for the excellent professional care it provided to Andy for the past five years. We cannot imagine how the staff could have been more caring and attentive to Andy's needs, especially in recent weeks.
