"OBITUARY" Died at her home at Rea, Michigan May 1, 1895, Mrs. Elizabeth Saxton, wife of Chauncey Saxton. The following was written by Mrs. Saxton, April 4, 1893, and put away to be found and read after her death.
Dundee. Monroe County. Michigan April 4. 1893
Dear beloved ones whosoever of my family that lives to survive me.
We are all born to die and sooner or later I expect to leave this earthly home and go to that home not made with hands but eternal in the heavens. It is my request that this be read at my funeral. I am alone today, there is sunshine in my soul, it may be years and it may not be but a few short weeks and even hours before these pages will be read, we know not the hour when the Master will come to take us away to His home. Thine will be done whenever my Master calleth after me.
I, Elizabeth L. Saxton, was born in New York State, in the town of Opian, on December 21, 1843, was married to Chauncey S. Saxton, January 2, 1863, in the town of Dansville, Livingstown County, New York and seven years later (1870) we came to Deerfield, Lenawee County, Michigan. Six children were born to us, four girls and two boys. Am now living at the present writing, 2 1/2 miles west of Dundee, Monroe County, Michigan. At the age of fifteen, found peace to my soul, believing on the Lord Jesus. Joined the Close Communion Baptist Church at Canaseraga, Allegany County, New York. I did not live a true Christian all these years but never forgot my Saviour and that I had a soul to save. I always one my duty to instruct my children the right and truthful ways, my aim was to be a kind and loving mother, and make home pleasant for all. In the year of 1893, February 14th, my husband and myself were brought to realize our lost condition and returned to our father's house and was washed white with the blood of the lamb. I praise His holy name for saving poor sinners like me. He had kept me all through danger, seen and unseen because He desired not the death of a sinner. Dear loved ones who survive me, don't put off until tomorrow, it may never come, if you have not given your heart to Jesus, do it now and meet me in Heaven. We may meet to part again but we know not that we part to meet again.
"Come Away to Jesus Now," Oh that is a sweet, loving, entreating song, it brought me to my loving Saviour, and I shall hold it to my memory and prize it as my all in all.
I wish my funeral to be held at home if convenient. Brother Belrner is the chosen one to preach, if he should survive me and can be had, if not him, anyone who you may choose.
For the text I will choose Psalms 55:18 "He hath delivered my soul in peace".
The hymn to be sung is "When Peace Like a River Attendeth My Way" also "Home At Last, On Heavenly Mountains," and "Is My Name Written There." These are my favorite hymns.
It may be years before I am called away, and it may not be but a short time, my heart bothers me very much. If anyone should find me dead, you will know what caused it. I hope I shall live to a good age, I want to do good to many souls and want to see my dear children all brought in the fold of Christ, but God's will must be done, I shall say well done, I will serve him while I live on earth. Elizabeth is my great-great paternal grandmother and her family tree has been traced back many generations beginning with my 9th great-grandfather, Elis Tennissen who was born around 1607. His son Theunis Eliasen VanBenschoten was born in November 1643 in Bunschoten, Netherlands and died February 1724 in Kingston, New York. Next in line is Gerritt VanBenshoten, born 1681 in Kingston, New York and died August 1722. Gerritt's son, Anthony VanBenshoten was born September 1709 in Kingston, New York and had a son whom he named Anthony who was born in 1746 in Minisink, New York. Anthony son Cornelius VanScoter (name change) was born in 1784 and he had a son James VanScoter who was born 1803 in Wilks Barre, Pennsylvania and died in October 1888. James and his wife Elizabeth Ohnewaldt had fourteen children and the youngest child was Elizabeth Lucinda VanScoter.
Elizabeth was one of eighteen children born to James & Elizabeth Ohnewaldt. Siblings were Caroline, Eliza, John, Chauncey, William (died in infancy), George, Griffith, William, Sarah, Emory, James, Catherine, Francis, Hanson, Harriet, Frank & Charles.
Elizabeth married Chauncey Saxton on 02 Jan 1863 in Dansville, Livingston County, New York and they had six children, Ida, Bessie, Gertrude, Delbert, Jennie & William. Elizabeth is my 2nd paternal grandmother.
